Hitched Up Trailers performs trailer DOT inspections at our Valley, Nebraska, dealership. If an inspection is due or you are putting a trailer into commercial service, call or text 402-620-6916 to confirm the inspection needed and schedule an appointment.
Know Which Inspection Your Trailer Needs
For commercial vehicles subject to the federal periodic inspection rule, 49 CFR 396.17 requires a passing inspection within the preceding 12 months and documentation on the vehicle. The trailer is a separate component of a combination vehicle for this purpose; a truck's inspection does not automatically cover its trailer.
Whether those requirements apply depends on the vehicle and operation. Personal use and different commercial operations can involve different rules. Share how and where you use the trailer when arranging the appointment, and confirm any specific compliance questions with the appropriate authority.
What a Periodic Inspection Covers
The applicable federal minimum standards address safety systems such as brakes, coupling devices, lighting, suspension, frame, tires, wheels and rims. The exact items depend on the vehicle's equipment. An inspection evaluates condition against the applicable standards; it is not a promise that every trailer will pass.
If a defect needs repair, discuss the work and any required reinspection with our team. Routine maintenance and checks before each trip remain important between inspection dates.
Prepare for Your Appointment
When scheduling, have your trailer's make, model, VIN and operating information available. Ask which documents to bring, including any prior inspection report or repair history relevant to the visit.
Describe known issues before arrival, including brake concerns, damaged lights, tire damage or suspension problems. Confirm whether the trailer should be unloaded and whether any tow vehicle needs to accompany it. Ask about current pricing, appointment timing and the documentation provided for the inspection.
If a known defect makes towing unsafe, discuss appropriate transport arrangements instead of driving the trailer to the appointment.
