Trailer Bearing Repacking: Why E-Z Lube Does Not Replace Inspection

By Hitched Up Trailers ·

A few pumps of grease can feel like a completed maintenance job. But grease entering a fitting does not tell you what condition the bearings are in. Hitched Up Trailers offers trailer bearing maintenance in Valley, Nebraska, to help you address wheel-end service before the next haul.

What E-Z Lube Does—and What It Cannot Show You

Dexter's E-Z Lube system routes grease through the spindle to the bearings. It is a useful lubrication feature when used as instructed. Dexter also makes clear that this feature does not replace periodic bearing inspection.

A grease fitting cannot show you pitting, damaged bearing surfaces, contamination or the condition of the seal. Proper service for conventional grease-packed bearings includes disassembly, cleaning and inspection, then repacking serviceable bearings and reassembly with the correct seal and adjustment. Damaged parts need replacement, not simply more grease.

Adding Grease Incorrectly Can Cause Problems

Dexter specifies a manual grease gun and slow application while rotating the hub for its E-Z Lube procedure. It warns that pneumatic grease guns can push grease past the seal. Grease on brake linings can compromise braking.

Use the instructions and compatible lubricant specified for your axle. E-Z Lube and sealed bearing systems such as Nev-R-Lube are different designs; they do not share the same service procedure.

Put Inspection on Your Maintenance Plan

Follow the schedule for your actual axle and bearing system, taking its use and operating conditions into account. If you bought a used trailer or cannot confirm when the bearings were last inspected, make that part of your service request.

When you call, tell us the trailer's make, axle information if available, and what you know about its maintenance history. Mention unusual wheel noise, looseness, leaking grease or other changes. Do not assume adding grease has resolved a symptom.
